Mobile version help

From this article, you will learn how to use the mobile version of the program on Android and iOS.

At first glance

After installing and running the application, you will see a screen with a list of projects. Other application pages have a similar arrangement of elements, so let's look at it in more detail.

At the top of the page is the main toolbar. In the left part of toolbar placed a button for calling the menu. On other pages, instead of the menu button, there may be a button to return to the previous page. In the middle is the title of the current page. And one or more auxiliary buttons can be located to the right (on the page with the list of projects this is the button for creating a new project).

In the center of the screen is the main content of the current page. On current page, it is a list of projects located on your device.

Finally, at the bottom of the screen, there may be an additional toolbar.

Menu

When the menu button is pressed, a panel with a list of actions available at the moment will appear on the left side of the screen.

After starting the application, the menu contains five items: authorization, projects, settings, help, and leave review.

Let's consider each of them in more detail.

Authorization in cloud service

When you click on the menu item "Authorization", the page for entering the private account of the cloud service KIT Scenarist will open.

Also, on this page, you can recover the password from your account, or register a new one.

After you correctly enter the data for authorization, the app will open the page of the personal account. In your personal account, you can set up personal information about your account, as well as monitor the resources used.

Also, after a successful login in the personal account, the menu item Authorization will change to your username and will lead to the personal account page.

Projects

The menu item "Projects" leads to a page with a list of projects.

After successful authorization, an additional tabbed panel appeared at the top of the project page, allowing you to switch between projects on your device and projects in the cloud service.

Each of the projects in the list has an "Options" button, the click of which brings up a list of actions available for the project. Depending on the location of the project, this can be: changing the project name, deleting the project, managing the list of co-authors.

Settings

The menu item "Settings" leads to the same page. On it, you can configure the application in a convenient way.

Here you can choose the language of the application, set the color scheme (dark is more suitable for work in dimly lit rooms, and also in the evening or at night, and light is convenient for work with sufficient light), and also configure the corkboard, script editor and navigator.

Help

When you click the Help menu item, a list of sections with reference information leading to this document opens.

Leave review

Clicking the "Leave review" button will redirect you to the application page in the application store of your operating system, here you can leave feedback about the application - report a problem, share your impressions of it and even suggest improvements that you think might be useful for the application.

Create a new project

To create a new project, go to the projects page and click the appropriate button (it's in the upper right corner). Pressing the button will display the page for creating a new project.

You need to set the project name different from the names of existing projects on the device. If a project with the name like you entered already exists, a warning message will be displayed on the screen.

After the project name is set, you need to click the "Create" button, and, the program will create a new project and redirect you to the research tree page. In addition, additional items related to the current project will be available on the menu:

Research - opens the current project research tree;
Cards - opens a page with cards of scenarios and acts;
Script - opens a page with the text of the script;
Save - saves current project changes;
Import - opens the page with the import instruction;
Export - opens the script export page;
Share - provides the ability to send the project entirely to any application installed on the device.

In more detail, each of them will be considered below.

Research

The research page serves as an entry point to the list of author's notes on the project. Here are the script parameters, title page, logline, and synopsis. Also in the general research tree are the list of characters, the list of locations and the list of notes ("Documents" element of the tree).

To edit an item from the research tree, simply touch it. If the selected item has data and it can be changed, the program will go to the data editor of the selected item. You can edit the following items:

Script - you can set the name of the script and its additional parameters;
Title page - you can customize the name of the author/authors, the year the script was created, etc .;
Logline - the text of the logline;
Synopsis - the text of the synopsis;
Versions - view a list of project versions;
Character - the character's name is configured in the script, also his real name and detailed description;
Location - the name of the location and its description;
Folder - the name and description of the group of documents;
Text document - the name and the actual text of the note.

In the upper right corner of the element editor there is a button for navigating to the document tree. When you click this button at the moment when you returned to the document tree and the edited item is selected, the edit and delete buttons for the current item become available in the top toolbar.

If the element cannot be edited (for example, for the upper-level elements "Characters", "Locations", "Documents") or if others can be nested into the currently selected element, the add button of the nested element will appear in the top toolbar. Pressing it displays the page where you can select the type of the newly added development element, as well as set its name. Clicking the add Item button will add a new item inside the item selected in the previous step.

Cards

The cards page provides access to the corkboard, on which acts and scenes of the script are located.

To move the card to another place you need to use a long touch. You clamp the card, and when it is ready for dragging, it rises from the board. Now it can be transferred to the desired place and released there. Along with this action, the scene to which this card belongs will also be moved to the script.

Editing and deleting a card is based on the same principle - first you need to capture the card and after that you can edit or delete it using the special buttons in the control panel.

Script editing

The script editing page at the top has a toolbar on which there are: a menu button, a script name, and a navigator button. The main part of the window is occupied by the text area in which the script is located. And at the bottom of the window, with the active keyboard, there is an additional panel with a list of block formats and a text search bar (the top toolbar is hidden while working with the text).

The script during the text input and the transition between different blocks is immediately formatted. The script template is slightly changed for the convenience of working on mobile devices, but in general, it is close to the standard, so you will not have any problems with determining the location of blocks of text and their purpose.

The bottom formats panel contains a list of available block formats. Abbreviations mean the first letters of the names:
SH - Scene heading
A - Action
C - Character
P - Parenthetical
D - Dialogue
SC - Scene characters
S - Shot
Tr - Transition
NT - Note on the text
F - Folder
L - Lyrics

The format of the current block where the cursor is located is highlighted in the panel.

In order to set the paragraph of the text to the desired format, you must place the cursor in this paragraph and select the desired format in blocks formats panel.

When you click on the search icon, the format panel changes to the search bar. You will have to enter the search text and move on to the next or previous match.

Script navigation

Pressing the navigation button (it is in the upper right corner of the script page with the hidden keyboard) will open the corresponding page in the application.

On top of the navigation page, is a button for calling the menu, the name of the project and a button to return to the text of the script.

In the center is the list of scenes of the current screenplay. The information for each scene consists of the scene number, the scene title (scene heading block or folder name), scene duration and scene text. In the settings, you can specify the need to display the scene numbers, as well as the number of displayed lines of the text of the scene.

Clicking on the scene will move you to the page with the text of the script and cursor will be placed at the scene start.

At the bottom of the navigator page, is a panel with summary information of the script - the number of scenes and the overall timing.

Saving the script

When you work with the project, the application automatically saves all the changes made if you have not interacted with the device for 5 seconds, or every 5 minutes, if you work without stopping.

If the current changes have not yet been saved, the menu will contain the "Save" item. Pressing it will save all changes. And the menu item itself turns into the line "Changes saved", notifying about the success of the operation.

If the saving was not successful, an information message with details of the problem and a suggestion of a method for solving it will be displayed.

Script import

The app supports import of scripts from the files docx, fdx, fountain, txt and own format kitsp.

To import a script from a file, or from another app, you need to touch the file (in the file manager or in another application) and select the KIT Scenarist in the list of proposed programs to open it.

After that, the page with the import parameters will open in the program. After setting the necessary parameters, you should select the project in which the script will be imported by clicking the "Existing project" button or import it into the new project by clicking the "New project" button and specifying its name.

After the import is complete, a page with the text of the script will open.

Script export

Pressing the "Export" menu item will open a page with export options. At the top of the page is the switch of the exported sections — development and script, each of which opens additional parameters related to the export of data of the selected section.

In the export settings of research documents, you can mark the documents required for export, and in the export settings of the script, you can select the file format to export to, the template of the script and other parameters depending on the type of the exported file.

Pressing the "Export" button (at the bottom of the page) will generate an exported file in accordance with all selected settings. After that, a system dialog will be opened for selecting a program to save or send an exported file.

Secret features

How to change the scale of the corkboard?

You need to put two fingers on the screen and push them apart to zoom in or close to zoom out (use pinch and stretch gestures).

How convenient to switch between pages?

To conveniently switch between pages, you can use the swipe gesture from right to left and in the opposite direction. Thus, you can navigate between virtually all screens of the application.

PDF Export Pagination
Hi! I'm Luca and I use Scenarist not only on my PC, but on my smartphone and tablet.
I saw a big difference of pagination when I export PDF between smartphone and tablet. How can I fix it?
Regards

Hello, Luca. Please, check that you use equal export templates in both versions (Advanced settings of export - Template - on desktop version, and Export - Template - on mobile).

Cards
I have been playing with the cards for awhile trying to see if there is any way around my issues.

1. If I create a scene it automatically makes a card.

2. If you go to the card that just got created and right click and try to edit the card it is blank. It seems the only way to edit a card is if you create the card in the cards section first.

3. Making a card from the card section first only puts scene heading in the script not the body of the card. Also if I create a card and just say SCENE 1 instead of INT./EXT. etc. then that will go in the script and I will have to change the script scene heading. When I go and change the scene heading in the script it doesn't update the card. It only updates the card if you originally made the card in the script.

4. If I make the scene from the script window then no description will go into the description box. It only makes a description if I create a card from the card section.

5. Ideally, it would be great if they would all stay in sync.

Suggestions:

1. Splitting the card where the bottom half would be notes that would show up in the description box.
2. Have a check mark on each of the cards that will not let it move itself to the script unless it is checked.
3. Or just have another section similar to the cards section that could be used as an outline. That doesn't touch the script at all. It would be just for an outline. Have a button at the top that you could flip back and forth between scenes and outline.
4. It needs an undo function badly. More than a few times I have wiped out things I didn't want to.

If you fixed this it would be by far the best program anyone has made.
Thanks!

Hello M.K.,

Thanks a lot for your feedback!

Yes, currently, cards module has some unintuitive things, but let me explain how it works a bit:
1. Card or scene has 4 attributes: name, scene heading, description, and text. When you create a card via cards module in the dialog you set name and description. After that name copied to the scene heading for you can find a needed scene in the script module, but scene text still empty. In another side, when you create a scene from the script module you set scene heading and scene text. After that in cards module, you see a card and since card hasn't name or description, scene heading and scene text displayed here.
2. In script module, you can see all scene attributes: scene heading and text in the main script editor, scene name and scene description in addition panel, which can be shown when you check it in additional panels toggle on top of the navigation panel. So when you change scene name or description in the additional panel you can see that they changed in cards module too. They synced already.
3. You can configure navigator the way you like. It can show scene headers or names and scene descriptions or text.

I hope this explanation can help you with your issues.

What about your suggestions:
1. Do you mean show simultaneously scene text and description on card?
2-3. What profit will it give to the user? And how it will be work if user wants to create scenes from the outline?
4. Currently undo should work. Check Ctrl+Z if you on Windows or Cmd+Z in on Mac.

How to create a new template on "Kit Scenarist"? I use Arabic to write, the size of the characters in this language do not allow a perfect reading and printing. Can we change the settings?
dimkanovikov 07.01.2019 at 23:32 # Reply
Hello, Mourad. Do you mean a template for mobile or desktop version?

In the mobile version, currently, there is no ability to create your own custom template, but in the desktop version, you can do it. For adding a custom template in desktop version go to the Settings - Templates Library and press plus icon in the toolbar. Then set up the new template and save it. After that go to the Settings - Script Editor - Editing and choose your newly created template. Plus, if you'll want to export script with this template you can set it in the advanced options of export in the export dialog.

Using Tilde (portuguese language) in mobile version
Hello there.

First: I loved Kit Scenarist, thank you very much. I basically obligated all my small screenwriting crew to use it too.

I am a portuguese speaker from Brazil. I just got the mobile version for iPad so I could use it on-the-go, but I am having problems with the tilde ( ~).

Whenever I am writing a word that uses it, like João or não, for example (não means no, so it's an important word), I get something like this: Joã~o or nã~o. And them I have to go back, erase the wrong tilde an re-write the word.

Is it just me? Am I doing something wrong? I am using the physical wireless apple keyboard that I use in other apps (and everything works fine with them).

Thanks for your time!

Hello Daniel,

Thanks a lot for your message and for your kind words!

What about your problem - can you check how it works with a virtual keyboard? Is issue still present, or this is the problem related just for the hardware keyboard?
Daniel Froes 09.05.2019 at 04:07 # Reply
Hi Dimitri!
It works with the virtual Keyboard normally. The problem with the tilde only happens with the physical keyboard.

Okay, I got it. I will check it and try to fix in one of the future updates.
Daniel fries 21.11.2019 at 20:43 # Reply
Hi Dimitri. Just for you to know, the same happens with other Portuguese signals. When I write tilde, ã, õ, ô, á, ç, etc, it gets duplicated also.

Thanks for the notification. I will check it for the next update.

Anything else. I would like to know if the files can be converted to PDF
dimkanovikov 09.05.2019 at 16:20 # Reply
Hello, Luis. You can try to export script to the PDF with Menu - Export - Script - Format should be set to PDF - Export button. And after that print your script in the format like on the screen.

Chromebook?
Hi, Mirko --

I am enjoying Kit Scenarist; it seems to be a great and very functional program. I'm trying to use it on my various platforms -- Linux, Android tablet and Chromebook. It's working well on Linux and on my mobile devices, but, when I try to open the Android version installed on my Chromebook, it crashes on startup. It seems like a Chromebook would be a natural place to use the Android version -- to your knowledge, is my problem unique, or might there be some tweaks that you might want to consider?

Hello Rusty,

I heard that on Chromebook KIT can be started as a Linux app. Did you try to install it from the deb package as described here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGVxM3xlVNc ?
